Today’s mobile subscribers have increasingly high expectations of mobile communications. As a mobile operator, you must build, manage, maintain and continually improve your network to maximize capacity, efficiency, and service delivery, while minimizing infrastructure and operational costs. As a leading provider of next-generation packet network infrastructure solutions, Starent Networks can help you to revolutionize your GSM/GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, and HSPA mobile broadband network by providing a complete and optimized packet handling solution.
SGSN
Starent’s Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN), supported on the ST40 multimedia core platform, provides a robust, reliable, and 3GPP standards-compliant solution for packet sessions flowing into and out of
GSM/GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, and HSPA mobile multimedia networks.
Starent’s SGSN combines subscriber and network intelligence with high performance characteristics to delivery outstanding call transaction rates that improve the performance and profitability of your network.
As deployed on the ST40 platform, Starent’s SGSN offers significant capacity and availability within an efficient footprint perfect for most anysize network. With simplified configuration and element management, the SGSN reduces operational time and costs. The system also reduces latency improving the performance of real-time applications that directly impact the subscriber experience.
Starent’s SGSN offers full UTRAN/GERAN to 3GPP core network access support in order to perform mobility management, GPRS Tunneling Protocol (GTP) tunneling and detunneling, Packet Data Protocol (PDP) context activation and management, attaches and detaches, and billing. Starent's SGSN uses Direct Tunnel architecture to improve the subscriber experience and reduce operational and capital expenditures by removing the requirement for user plane processing on the SGSN.
Starent’s SGSN performs IP-based transport on all radio and core network interfaces using standard interfaces. This IP-based transport capability enhances SGSN performance and scalability, while reducing inter-connectivity complexity—providing operators with higher performance for less operational expenditure. In addition, Starent’s SGSN can support any combination of 2.5G and 3G networks on a single platform and offers both ATM and Frame Relay interfaces to connect with legacy 2.5G network equipment.

Efficient Architecture
Network efficiency and operational simplicity can be increased further by combining the SGSN with Starent’s Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) on the same ST40 multimedia core platform. The ST40 platform is capable of handling the SGSN's state heavy characteristics and GGSN's processing intensive characteristics within a single system through the optimal use of common hardware, memory, and CPU resources.
The Starent SGSN’s ability to support 2.5G and 3G services in the same chassis results in operational optimizations and efficiencies, as well as cost savings. Since the SGSN handles 2.5G and 3G procedures in the same processes, there is a reduction in the number of IP addresses required, as both services appear as a single SGSN service and use common uplinks. In addition, there are no internal software interfaces between processes during 2.5G/3G hand-offs. In this way, the Starent SGSN avoids repeated exchanges with the Home Location Registry (HLR) to retrieve the same subscriber state.
Direct Tunnel Support
Starent’s SGSN makes use of the Direct Tunnel architecture, which enables the SGSN to establish a direct subscriber plane tunnel between the radio access network (RAN) and the GGSN. The use of Direct Tunnels improves the subscriber experience by eliminating SGSN tunnel “switching” latency from the user plane. Additionally, the Direct Tunnel architecture optimizes the usage of resources by removing the requirement for user plane processing on the SGSN. This optimization results in lower hardware requirements on the SGSN and simpler upgrades to support traffic increases.
Designed for Network Evolution
In addition to providing superior performance in your current network, the innovative design of Starent’s SGSN on the ST40 ensures that this intelligent and high capacity platform will support the future evolution of your network towards HSPA networks. |
