Mobile operators are looking to the IMS/MMD Architecture to help enhance their subscribers’ experience and be able to deliver voice, data, and multimedia over IP. As operators get ready to deploy IMS/MMD, they'll require an easy on-ramp for deploying SIP-based subscriber services while supporting various network control operations that provide the necessary intelligence to ensure a robust, carrier-class subscriber experience is achieved in this always changing multimedia environment.
Session Control Manager (SCM)
Starent’s Session Control Manager provides an easy on-ramp to deploying Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)-based services and a future-proof migration path to the IP Multimedia Subsystem/Multimedia Domain (IMS/MMD) architectures.
The Session Control Manager consists of an IETF-compliant SIP Proxy/Registrar, a 3GPP/3GPP2-compliant Proxy Call Session Control Function (P-CSCF), and a Policy Agent (PA) that are integrated into Starent Networks’ ST16 and ST40 multimedia core platforms.
Starent’s Session Control Manager can be combined into the mobile industry’s most powerful Home Agent (HA) or Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN). Operators can take advantage of the platform’s high performance, intelligence, distributed architecture, and high availability characteristics. Operators can also take advantage of Starent’s In-line Services, offering further integration of service enabling technology, including payload manipulation, virtual private networks,end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS), content filtering, and deep packet inspection.
When integrated into Starent’s session-aware HA or GGSN platform, the Session Control Manager becomes the first SIP hop in the network, providing SIP routing, translation, and interworking. With these capabilities, operators can monitor and control all SIP-based sessions and execute additional value-added functions. As the logical anchor point within the packet core, the Session Control Manager improves the user experience with device and location independence, enhancing subscriber control and policy enforcement with faster, more intelligent decisions for multimedia services.
This reliable solution creates a carrier-class SIP infrastructure that enables operators to immediately launch a full suite of SIP-based services that provide subscribers with a rich, multimedia experience, such as mobility with voice continuity, Voice over IP (VoIP),Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC), presence, instant messaging, and others.
The Starent Session Control Manager eliminates the capital and operational barriers associated with deploying traditional, server-based SIP proxies, which lack carrier-class characteristics, occupy valuable rack space, and require a plethora of network interfaces, while also introducing additional control hops in the network that add call setup latency.
Key Features & Benefits
- Intelligent integration – lowers operational expenditure and reduces the number of network elements, network interfaces, and call setup latency. For deployed platforms, no new hardware is necessary to install or manage. Functionality is enabled with a simple software download.
- Dual-mode SIP proxy – simultaneously supports IETF SIP and 3GPP/3GPP2 IMS/MMD clients.
- SIP routing engine – deploys SIP in a secure and controlled fashion via auto discovery of SIP elements, subscriber privacy, call fraud prevention, network security, and thwarting network overload conditions.
- IP mobility – enables access-independent connectivity to a multitude of technologies, such as 3G, WiFi, WiMAX, and others.
- Policy agent – removes latency and extraneous messaging through domain-based policy decision for intelligent, localized enforcement.
