The Starent ST16 and ST40 were designed to integrate network and service enhancing capabilities. These "In-line" Services allow mobile operators to offer new services while also ensuring efficient traffic flow end-to-end with a simplified network topology. In-line Services are those services that are deployed within the call flow, as opposed to requiring the call to be off-loaded to service provisioning servers.

Through implementation of In-line Services, network performance is greatly improved by eliminating the multiple hops required when provisioning a service in a server elsewhere in the network — which also requires load-balancing resources. In-line Services take advantage of the platforms' powerful processing and abundant memory to ensure more efficient traffic flow end-to-end, and a more secure and satisfying subscriber experience.
